Meet Johor Plant Manager, Dennis Chung, who has 24 years of experience and leadership in manufacturing operations with companies like Flex, BBraun, and Intel in Malaysia. He has held various functional roles, such as managing the operational activities and strategic goals for manufacturing sites, as well as ensuring compliance with local regulations and ISOs. Dennis joined Oliver in 2023, and in his current role is responsible for the opening of the new Johor plant. Let’s check in with Dennis to learn more about what his day-to-day looks like while spearheading the opening of this new facility:

Q

Can you describe your role as Plant Manager?

As Plant Manager for the new Johor facility, my current responsibility is to oversee the construction and have the new manufacturing facility ready for operation on schedule.  As we gear up towards opening the plant, we want to ensure that the plant is built for manufacturing where production will run smoothly and maintain the highest level of quality standards, while aligning with company goals for efficiency and growth. As for the progress, I am happy to share that we are tracking on plan and are set to meet our target completion by the end of 2024.
Q

How do you foster a culture of continuous improvement within your team?

In the current dynamic and competitive world, continuous improvement must be embedded into our culture. I believe it can be achieved through close communication and teamwork. Weekly cadences and activities help us achieve this and allow the team to be creative, share ideas, and consistently implement best practices to drive higher efficiency and effectiveness. On a regular basis we also convene with the global Oliver team, APAC team, and our counterparts in Suzhou to share experiences and better leverage on the learnings of others.
Q

How do you maintain work-life balance in a demanding role like yours?

Time management plays a big part in it. I try to delegate responsibilities wherever necessary and appropriate. Also being flexible in time is essential when working with a global team as meetings maybe happen at odd hours for APAC. Over the weekends, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and doing things that help me recharge my energy and maintain my overall well-being like aerobic exercises. But, even with my team at work, I always ensure we have a good amount of time to bond over lunch and social gatheringI think this is an important part to everyone’s job. You need to take time to get to know those you work with.
Q

What do you like most about your role?

What I love most about my role is the opportunity to bring people together and create something impactful. Working with diverse stakeholders, globally and locally, I find joy in understanding their perspectives and collaboratively overcoming challenges. This is a huge milestone for Oliver. The dynamic nature of problem-solving keeps me engaged, and the strong relationships we build along the way are incredibly rewarding. Leading a team and celebrating our collective achievements is truly fulfilling, as it reminds me of the positive impact we can make when we work together.
Q

Looking ahead, what are your goals for the new facility?

Our goal is to establish the new facility as a leader in healthcare packaging and manufacturing excellence. We aim to optimize production processes, enhance product quality, and expand our capabilities to meet the expectations of our customers as well as the growing market demands within the Asia-Pacific.

The plant will bolster Oliver’s regional presence and help us tackle any future supply-chain challenges and expertise gaps that may affect the healthcare industry. Here you can observe the remarkable transformation of this construction site from foundation to its ongoing structure in a detailed timelapse.

From colleagues to developers and partners, everyone has contributed to the success of this ongoing achievement.
