In a very regulated industry, like medical packaging, it’s always interesting to see how various companies interpret and implement guidelines. There are a couple of examples that come to mind when I think of this, but one that has always piqued my interest has been single vs. double sterile barrier systems. In all the years I have been in industry, it has not been clear to me for when a double sterile barrier is used or not. In fact, when asking our customers what goes into the decision, the responses have varied significantly. This of course, sparked my interest to get a pulse on various aspects of the industry and their thoughts around double sterile barrier systems.
Over the past few months, we’ve talked with MDMs, sterilization companies, design teams, testing houses, nurses, and doctors to get a better understanding of their thoughts around single vs. double sterile barrier systems. To get the most honest answers, we promised our interviewees anonymity (unless they agreed otherwise) and from our discussions it’s clear, there is not just one simple answer, and the opinions around double sterile barrier systems vary just as much as we anticipated. Over the coming weeks on the PackTalk blog, we’ll share with you our findings, focusing on each segment that we spoke with. The goal? To provide you with different opinions and expertise so you can make an educated decision about what type of sterile barrier system is right for you and your product in the future.
